The Central Executive Committee of the National Resistance Movement has finalized plans for the party internal election of the 10th Parliament Speaker and the deputy.

The two days CEC sitting at State House Entebbe from Sunday concluded that the party election for the Speaker and the deputy will take place on 5th May 2016, a week before the swearing in of President Yoweri Museveni scheduled for 12th May.

NRM will get its candidates for the two parliamentary positions two weeks before the general election of the Speaker and the deputy scheduled for May 19th.

According to the CEC arrangement seen by this website, the expression of interest for those in the race started on Tuesday of 26th April 2016 and expected to go on for 4 days up to the 29th of this month.
The applications or the letters for the expression of interests are being sent to the party’s Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi.

The party EC Chairperson will then forward the names to the CEC which is expected to convene again on 2nd May 2016. This sitting is to vet the names of those who have expressed interest and approve them.

The approved candidates shall be presented to the NRM MPs elect at State House Entebbe.

The first CEC sitting on the 12th of this month at the same venue changed the rules for the election of the party flag bearer for the Speaker.

The NRM MPs used to converge for the election of the Speaker after swearing in. The rules say the party Caucus only exists after swearing in.

The sitting on Sunday and Monday first approved the new resolution on the changing of this rule.
The two people in the race for the Speaker are incumbent, Rebecca Kadaga and her deputy Jacob Oulanyah.

The two have already been doing open campaigns even before the doors for the exercise was opened.

The Deputy Speaker position has attracted Members of Parliament including Denis Hamson Obua of Ajuri county, Monica Amoding of Kumi district, Vincent Niwagaba of Ndorwa and Raphael Magyezi among others.

Unconfirmed reports say there is a plan to front the Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa for
the Deputy Speaker too.
