The Uganda Peoples’ Defense Forces UPDF has Thursday afternoon recovered 2 guns,3 bombs and 3 grenades at Benedictine Eye Hospital in Nyangole Parish Tororo Municipality.
The recovered weapons include; self-loading rifle, a Sub Machine Gun (SMG), three anti-tank bombs and three grenades.
According to Captain Isaac Oware the UPDF 3rd Division Public Relations Officer, the weapons were recovered following a tip off from one concerned area resident, Mr. Oboth Okumu.
Mr. Okumu, a casual laborer at the hospital was digging at the backyard of the hospital when he hit a metal, only to discover that it was an assortment of weapons buried in a pit.
Captain Oware believes the guns and bombs could have been abandoned by the 1980 Alice Lakwena insurgents.
“We suspect that these recovered arms were abandoned, we have them in our custody and we are examining them and will later be detonated,” Mr. Oware told ChimpReports.
Benedictine Eye Hospital administration has not been able to comment on the matter.
Since January this year, the UPDF have recovered 10 guns, 322 rounds of live ammunitions and 3 bombs in the 3rd division operation area that covers Elgon, Karamoja and Bukedi regions.
“Most of the recovered guns were recovered in operations against cattle rustling in Karamoja region,” the 3rd division spokesperson said.
The UPDF spokesperson has then encouraged the general public to report any suspicious objects to security for safety purposes.
