The diocese of North Kigezi in Rukungiri district has finally dropped the idea of turning Makobore High School into a mixed school.

The board of governors headed by Bishop Benon Magezi, the new Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese had decided that at the beginning of the new term on 6th February 2017, the school, that has been a boys-only should open its doors to female students as well.

This decision was informed by the school’s poor performance in the national examinations as well as the continuous dip in its enrollment.

The move was immediately opposed by old students led by the Rukungiri Municipality MP Roland Kaginda Mugume and Rujumbura county MP Fred Turyamuhweza Tumuheirwe.

The old boys had already taken the diocese to court through the lawyers of Bwagi and Company Advocates, opposing the change.

Rt. Rev. Benon Magezi while addressing the Press at the diocesan offices at Kinyasano yesterday said that after making consultations with stakeholders, they decided to keep the school’s single status.

He also revealed that efforts are underway to register the school under the Universal Secondary Education to enhance the enrollment numbers.

“The move to make it mixed failed but it will have a day and boarding school program; we shall also work hard to register the school USE,” said Bishop Magezi.

He added that the school will offer bursaries to the best candidates at PLE and UCE and will reduce school fees for day scholars to attract more students.
