
Rwanda, through Aviation Travel and Logistics Holdings Limited (ATL) has entered a partnership with Portuguese construction company Mota-Engil Engenharia e Construcao Africa to construct a new international airport.
The agreement comprises the financing, construction and operation of the airport project over a period 25 years with an optional 15 years extension.
The initial investment of the Bugesera International Airport (BIA) is estimated at USD 418 million and is to be fast tracked to be completed by December 2018.
With this project, Rwanda anticipates enhancement of it economic growth and development through increased tourism as a Business Conference destination.
The new airport will serve as Rwanda’s gateway to the external world and will facilitate trade and investments and act as a hub for Rwandair’s growth strategy and other commercial airlines serving the region.
While speaking at the signing ceremony, Ministers Claver Gatete and James Musoni who represented the government of Rwanda appreciated Mota-Engil’s commitment to partner in this project and stressed that this will be a transformational undertaking for the country. The two pledged the government’s full support for the success of the project.
They also thanked the negotiating team led by Rwanda Development Board (RDB) for their diligence.
Mr. Manuel Mota, the Chief Executive Officer of Mota – Engil Africa reiterated the commitment of the Company to develop the project on the desired standards and lauded the existing cooperation with government.
He emphasized the company’s commitment to partner with the country in its development endeavor.
