A number of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Members of Parliament today stormed out the State of the Nation Address by President Yoweri Museveni at the Kampala Serena Conference Center.
The MPs included Buhweju Constituency MP Francis Mwujukye, Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa and Makindye Division MP Allan Sewanyana.
The members intended to use the event to call for the release of the opposition party’s presidential candidate Col Dr Kizza Besigye, who is locked up in Luzira Prison on Treason Charges. Besigye is expected back in court tomorrow Wednesday.
The members in the middle of the President’s speech hoisted placards with the words “Release Dr Besigye.”
They however decided to storm out of the Vitoria Hall after the Speaker of Parliament interrupted the President and ordered them to put down their placards.
While speaking to our report outside of the building after the address, MP Francis Mwijukye said he was disappointed that the President avoided the issue of Dr Besigye in his speech.
“This is a big issue in the country; Dr Besigye who won the February presidential election a he is being punished for that, he should have addressed this matter.
The newly appointed Leader of Opposition Hon Winnie Kizza told Chimpreports that what the members did was commendable and that it was their constitutional right.
