Wandegeya based Abill Clinich on Thursday unveiled their newly acquired Laparsacopy Tower — a keyhole surgical machine — the first of its kind in Uganda.

Laparoscopic surgery is a modern surgical technique in which operations are performed far from their location through small incisions usually 0.5 – 1.5cm elsewhere in the body.

Rosette Kahunde, the General Manager of Abii clinic confirmed at the machine launch that it will be the first of its kind in Uganda.

She said the machine will be primarily used to operate abdominal or pelvic cavities and also thoracic or chest cavity.

While addressing the media at Hotel Africa, Kahunde outlined some of the advantages of laparoscopic surgery compared to the open procedure.

“With laparoscopic surgery, pain and hemorrhaging are reduced due to smaller incisions and recovery times are shorter which a different case with the common open procedure is.”

The key element in laparoscopic surgery is the use of a laparoscope, a long fiber optic cable system which allows viewing of the affected area by snaking the cable from a more distant, but more easily accessible location.

“Most patients who have used it abroad always recommend it because of the quick results it yields and above it leaves a very small scar which with time disappears,” said Kahunde.
