The Inspector General of Police Gen. Kale Kayihura says he is worried phones are fast becoming tools used by criminals to orchestrate crimes in the country and world at large.
The police boss made the remarks on Tuesday while addressing journalists at the Uganda Communications Commission headquarters in Bugoloobi, following a meeting between UCC, telecom companies and security agencies.
“Phones are very useful especially for communication, assisting business and many other uses while being used by good people,”Gen. Kayihura said.
“The problem is that bad people are using them as weapons for carrying out crimes and other bad purposes.”
The IGP said that the recent trend shows that phones have been the most used tools in committing crimes citing the Lugogo 2010 bombings, murder of Muslim clerics and many other crimes committed in the country in the recent years.
“Even in the murder of prominent people like AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi, phones have been used by criminals for planning and communication,” he said.
The IGP highlighted a need to check on the trend saying the mandatory registration of sim-cards would be useful.
He said this will help police in their fight against criminals in the country because they would be in position to trace whoever uses the phone in the bad ways.
