Property worth million of shillings was destroyed last night when floods swept away houses and gardens in Muko sub county, Rubanda district.
The heavy rains that lasted at least two hours started at around 01:00am in the night.
The rain caused landslides which destroyed fifteen houses, dormitories at Muko High school and injured two people.
The affected villages include Habutoboore, Rukoro I, Rukoro II Market area, Kagorogoro, Mukibungo, Igabiro, Rushekye, Karengyere, Ikamiro and Rugarambiro.
The road branching off Kabale-Kisoro road to Muko sub county headquarters, Muko Health center II and Muko police station was cut off by floods.
Jared Muhwezi, the Muko Sub County Chief says the floods also swept away gardens of crops as well as animals.
Muhwezi says the floods washed away fifteen houses, twenty toilets, thirteen hectares of Irish potato gardens and several gardens of cabbages, 63 bags of Irish Potato seeds 26, 7 pigs, 4cows, 9 bags of maize flour among others. Nobody however, was killed in the floods.
The chairman now fears the area could be hit by famine. He blamed locals for continuously neglecting proper methods of farming like terracing and crop rotation in order to reduce the speed of running water, despite several sensitization messages leaders have put across.
Rev. Jackson Rutosha, the head teacher of Muko high school says the school kitchen, staff quarters and the tanks have been covered by mud.
“I appeal to government to come to their rescue now that students and teachers don’t have where to stay,” he said..
Silva Niringiyimana, the Health Inspector for Muko Sub County expressed worry about a possible outbreak of diseases like dysentery and cholera since most of the toilets were destroyed.
Jogo Kenneth Biryabarema, the Kabale District Chairperson says that the District is in the process of assessing the damage caused before reporting to the Ministry of Disaster preparedness.
