Police have arrested Kasese Municipality Member of Parliament Hon Robert Centenary, in connection with the violence in the Kasese Region last year.
The MP told us on phone Tuesday morning that he was arrested and taken to CID offices in Kibuli to record a statement.
He told us briefly that he was being charged with Libel and Defamation against former Defense Minister Chrispus Kiyonga.
He however couldn’t divulge the details of the said accusations and neither could his lawyer Sam Muyizzi who promised to get back to us later.
“As a lawyer I cannot preempt the case, but it’s basically to do with the Kasese Violence; you should be able to get more details in the evening,” said the counsel.
MP Centenary together with the all the Members of Parliament from Kasese District including the leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza have been strongly vocal in the events that led and followed the November 2016 attacks on the Palace of the Rwenzururu King on which more than 100 people were killed and the King arrested.
While the MPs among others argue that the attacks on Kasese by government forces was in revenge for the regions support of the opposition in the past elections, former Minister Kiyonga maintains that the Kasese Problem is inbred.
Kampala Police spokesperson Emilian Kayima said he was not yet aware of the the MP’s arrest.
