Makerere University has bowed slightly to student pressure and agreed to review its fees policy in which students are required to clear their dues in the first 12 weeks of the semester.
The policy has been contested by the students over the past few years, but the university is insistent that only then will it be able to efficiently conduct business.
Students from Tuesday morning have been involved in violent demonstration at the campus, putting business there on hold.
The University Council this morning convened an emergency meeting with student leaders and the administration in which it was resolved that the fees policy is reviewed to the convenience of the students.
But pending the review, the meeting resolved that the policy as its stands would be maintained.
In a communiqué issued this afternoon, the University administration revealed that students are still expected to have cleared their dues 100% by the 12th week which clocks on April 23rd.
“Students, Parents, Guardians and sponsors are requested to crosscheck the status of the tuition fees payments and ensure that the students will have paid 100% not later than April 23,” directed the administration.
Those who will not have paid fully by this time, according to this directive, will be deemed to have withdrawn from the university.
The university will also investigate students who were involved in the strike and those that missed tests or exams in the past two days will be allowed to do them.
