Police are yet to recover the weapon used in the shocking murder of 32-year-old Kenneth Akena on Saturday night at the Forest mall in Lugogo.
It has been widely speculated that Akena was gunned down by Kampala businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu after the former accidentally scratched the latter’s vehicle.
During a news conference on Monday, Police spokesperson Andrew Felix Kaweesi said investigations have began into what prompted the murder of the deceased and that the gun used to shoot him hasn’t been found yet.
Police is so far holding Matthew Kanyamunyu and his fiancée Cynthia in custody as suspects.
But Kaweesi said the two claim they only helped Akena to the hospital to seek immediate assistance.
“We conducted searches but found no gun. Investigations are still ongoing and we shall get to know whether the suspect had the gun and also whether he possessed it legally,” Kaweesi said adding that “this isn’t a hard case for us to investigate.”
The brother to the deceased on Sunday told police that Akena before dying in hospital revealed to him that the two people who carried him to hospital are the ones that shot him.
“Part of the evidence given to police by Akena’s brother suggests that the deceased was killed at the mall,” said Kaweesi.
“He had been trying to park his car when he suddenly brushed on the suspect’s car and was shot at when he came out to apologize. It’s good information and we shall consider it while investigating.”
Police also intend to question the security guards that were deployed at the mall at the fateful night as well as scrutinize CCTV camera footage to arrive at what transpired.
Kaweesi also told journalists; “The cartridge hasn’t been recovered too but we shall use the postmortem findings to understand the size of the projectile. This will assist us in knowing the kind of gun that was used.”
Police refuted claims initial reports that Kanyamunyu is a security operative.
The shooting has since angered the nation, with many calling for strict regulation of firearms.
If discovered that the suspect indeed shot Akena, Police say it will be forced to review the regulations regarding he use of private guns.
