
A 20 year old driving student on Sunday evening accidentally drove into Lake Bunyonyi and died.
Godfrey Ahimbisibwe, son of Justus Kurama a resident of Kekubo in Northern Division, Kabale Municipality was killed in the accident at around 7pm yesterday.
The deceased, it is said, was learning to drive in his father’s Toyota Corona which veered off the road and plunged in the lake.
Rescuers were not hasty enough to save the youngster from drowning.
According to one of the eyewitnesses Drake Diaz Owoyesigire, Police were called in but failed to retrieve the body and it was the residents who jumped in the waters after 2 hours and pulled the body out with ropes.
Ahimbisibwe according to locals, decided to drive by himself, to the shore of Lake Bunyonyi to visit his father where he runs a business.
Dickens Bindeeba, the Kabale District Police Commander says that although police was alerted, they had no solution because they don’t have marine officers at the station.
This is the second such incident on Lake Bunyonyi in a period of three months. On 22nd of August this year, five family members drowned after their canoe capsized.
The victims were reportedly travelling from a party in Mushebeya,Kamuganguzi Sub County, to their home in Kabirago Ndarura village, Rubaya Sub county, Kabale District when the tragedy occurred.
