Makindye General Court Martial chairman Lt. Gen Andrew Gutti has sentenced Corporal Daniel Mangeni to 10 years in prison, after convicting him of robbery at Trend Forex Bureau in Jinja.
Here the accused is said to have robbed huge sums of money 29th April 2013, both in local and foreign currency.
Although Corporal Mangeni had pleaded not guilty, the prosecution brought enough evidence which court based on to convict him on 5th September on all counts.
In his judgment, chairman Gutti said he considered the 5years that the convict has been on remand.
Mangeni’s lawyer had pleaded for a lenient sentence because he is the sole bread winner to his family.
State on the other hand wanted a maximum sentence because Mangeni is a habitual offender who has ever been convicted on two offences by the same court.
“Being mindful of that factor the convict is a habitual offender who needs to be kept away from the public, I therefore sentence you to 10 years in prison” ruled Gutti.
Lt Gen Andrew Gutti further informed the convict that he has a right to appeal in case he is not satisfied with the sentence handed over to him.
