Police in Kampala are holding a 28-year-old man who tried to set himself ablaze near State House Nakasero in the wee hours of Monday.
Gerard Kato, a resident of Kasubi was apprehended by police led by CPS DPC Aaron Baguma with a mattress he intended to use for his mission near the State House gate at All Saint Church in Nakasero .
“He was arrested at around 5:30 am in the company of journalists after being found with the entire body dowsed in petrol and was preparing to lie in the middle of the road to State House before setting himself on fire,” police publicist Fred Enanga told journalists on Monday morning.
“We found a jerry can of petrol that we suspect he had used to dowse his entire body before his mission could kickoff.”
The police mouthpiece said that on interrogation, the suspect said he was protesting against the high unemployment rates in the country.
“He will be charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct for his acts,” said Enanga, adding everyone is free to exercise their rights but not in a way which is not in contravention of the law.
The suspect is currently detained at the Kampala Central Police Station.
