Police have deployed anti-riot personnel at Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court amid fears that lawyers representing complainants in a case of suspected police brutality would be attacked.
Pro-police demonstrators had earlier surrounded lawyer Abdallah Kiwanuka’s car, warning him to “leave Gen Kayihura alone.”
The protesters also carried banners saying instead of prosecuting Kayihura, he should be applauded for enforcing peace and stability in the country.
After today’s court session, lawyers walked to the Magistrate’s Chambers for a brief meeting.
The visibly charged pro-police supporters refused to leave the court premises, sparking fears of a possible confrontation with lawyers.
Nicholas Opiyo, who represented the plaintiffs, tweeted: “Barricaded I he Chambers of the Chief Magistrate’s Court of Makindye. Rowdy protesters want to beat up lawyers representing complainants.”
The police commanders are accused of beating up opposition enthusiasts during city processions.
The case could not take off today due to absence of both parties.
The Director of Public Prosecution was today allowed to file an application to take over prosecution of the case.
