The inspector General of Police Gen Edward Kale Kayihura is slated tomorrow Thursday, to appear before the Parliamentary Defense and Internal Affairs Committee.
The committee is chaired by the former Ugandan Police Force spokesperson Hon Judith Nabakooba, who is currently the Woman MP for Mityana district.
Hon Nabakooba says the committee will tomorrow at 10am be meeting with the top officials from the police force headed by the IGP as well as the Uganda Prisons authorities.
The committee was today scheduled to meet with the Ministry of Internal Affairs officials but neither the state minister nor the senior minister showed up, a one was attending cabinet while the other is out of the country.
Hon Nabakooba told NBS Television at Parliament today that she is not intimidated by tomorrow’s meeting with her former bosses.
She said she retired from the police force and now has a new mandate as a parliamentarian which is entirely different and independent from the police.
“You ought to know that I now represent the people of Mityana district; they are the ones that sent me here,” she said.
“It’s true we are just beginning our work as a committee and most of the members on the committee are new; but I, having a background from security doesn’t stop me from performing my parliamentary work.”
“I believe that people out there, who are skeptical about my ability to face the IGP, are honest enough to understand that this time round I have a duty to perform as a committee chair; we are also expected to report back to parliament.”
Besides, she noted, she is not the first person with a security background to chair the committee, citing the former chair Hon Simon Mulongo who was from the Ministry of Defense.
According to some of the committee members, the IGP is expected to answer to among others the concerns of the recent police brutality on opposition supporters.
The IGP came under stern scrutiny when he openly defended police’s flogging of supporters of Col Dr Kizza Besigye, saying that this was more effective than teargas and rubber bullets.
