Government through the Ministry of Internal Affairs has trimmed by half the cost visas for foreigners entering the country.

The Ministry yesterday sent out a communiqué to all Ugandan embassies and border points, directing that foreigners seeking to enter Uganda will no longer be required to pay $100 but only $50.

The new visa prices takes effect starting today Friday July 22 according to communiqué seen by Chimpreports.

“The Minister of Internal Affairs has issued a statutory instrument Number 13 of 2016 to effect the change,” it read in part. “All Ugandan borders have been notified to effect the change.”

According to the Ministry, the new attractive price is aimed at promoting the country’s tourism sector.

Uganda’s tourism industry continues to attract fewer visitors compared to neighboring countries despite the country being ranked for the past few years among the world’s top tourism destinations.

The new ministry directive follows the recent introduction of the e-visa where applicants are required to apply and have their visas approved with notifications sent to them and visas issued at their borders.

The new visa price has been welcomed by a number of stakeholders as a step in the right direction.

Uganda’s Ambassador to South Africa, Mr Julius Moto remarked, “I can’t wait for it to fall to zero.”
