Police in Kalangala District have this morning arrested four people in connection with the murder of Thomas Ssetuba, a radio journalist who has been working with Ssese FM in the island district.

Ssetuba was attacked and beaten on Tuesday morning and he died in the wee hours of Wednesday, according to local authorities.

The murder of the reporter was a result of a long standing misunderstanding over a 2 acre piece of land planted with palm oil, which is said to have been owned by Ssetuba.

Recently according to locals, some encroachers started setting up shelters on this land.

Yesterday when the deceased, accompanied by his casual labourers stepped on the land to harvest the crops, they were waylaid and beaten up badly by the alleged encroachers before police intervened to rescue them.

“We received information as police that the deceased was going to his plantation but we advised him to first get a court order,” said Idi Ibin Ssenkumbi, the greater Masaka police spokesperson

“We however leant too late that he had proceeded with a group of people to the plantation without any protection.”

At around 9:00am, Ssenkunbi says, the deceased was rounded up and beaten to coma and upon rescue by police in the area, he died on the way to hospital.

“We have arrested so far 4 people, but we intend to arrest more who we believe were involved in the heinous act.”
