Everyone involved in the scheme through which government lost up to UGX. 24billion meant for the construction of the Mukono – Kyetume — Katosi road, will be made to bring back this money, President Yoweri Museveni has vowed.
Although, more money has been allocated to this road and construction has resumed, Museveni warned today, that all those implicated in swindling the initially allocated funds will have to “vomit” it.
Museveni was speaking at this year’s Heroes Day Celebrations in Buikwe District; one of the areas that was supportive of the 1980s NRA’s armed struggle that brought Museveni’s government into power.
The President said he decided to award this road to the people of Buikwe even though they voted an opposition Member of Parliament.
“Despite our long history of the struggle, you people decided in the elections to send me this man Lulume (Bayiga). But I decided that I would not retaliate because God is there. So I told my people in government to give you this road,” said the President.
“Your people at first ate the money we sent for the road, but like I have always told you, if the rats eat some of your millet in the barn, you don’t stop planting more millet. The good thing is that we have laid many traps this term and we shall capture all these thieves.”
“Now the construction of the road has resumed and we are using our own money as government. Everyone that was implicated in the theft of the money for this road will have to vomit it.”
Former Minister of Works Abraham Byandala together with officials from Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) the Works Ministry and other individuals involved in the awarding of the road to a nonexistent company, are currently undergoing trial at the Anti Corruption Court in Kampala.
Meanwhile at the event, President Museveni spoke irritably against the practice of evicting people from their land by rich people and bibanja owners.
Museveni said that government is looking for medicine for this challenge after receiving numerous complaints.
“I thought that people from the Lands Ministry were nationalistic but it seems they don’t care, said the president.”
“They are conniving with evictors and courts of law which rule unfairly against the poor squatters, which cannot even afford legal fees. But this term, with the help from your MPs we are going to find the final solution to this.”
