National Resistance Movement’s Hon Jacob Oulanyah has Thursday afternoon been reelected Deputy Speaker of the 10th Parliament.

The Parliamentary chambers exploded with loud cheers of excitement from supporters of the Omoro County Member of Parliament, who shook off tight competition from Kampala Central Member of Parliament Hon Al Hajj Muhammad Nsereko.

Oulanya polled 300 votes while Nsereko managed 115 of the total 416 one ballot was ruled invalid.

The Speaker election event was graced by HE President Yoweri Museveni and presided over by Deputy Chief Justice Stephen Kavuma.

The voting which was by secret ballot, commenced about 15 minutes to 1pm and ended shortly after 2:30PM.

Uganda People’s Defense Forces’ Chief Political Commissar Lt Col Felix Kulayigye was earlier nominated into the race by the Mukono Municipality MP Hon Betty Nambooze but he declined to contest.

Hon Muhammad Nsereko weeks ago turned down the ruling NRM party’s request to stand down for the incumbent deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah.

Oulanyah’s initial interest was in the Speaker’s seat and for months he vigorously campaigned against his boss Rebecca Kadaga.

He was however, to be compelled to stand down for the incumbent Kadaga, who was today reelected unopposed to steer the National Assembly for the second and last term.
