Residents in Mbarara Municipality were treated to drama, as two women claimed ownership of a one year old baby girl.

The case was reported at Mbarara Central Police Station on Friday by one Fiona Akankwasa, who claims that the toddler was stolen from her.

Judith Beingana, the known mother of the baby was summoned to the police station to give her version of the story.

The case however, turned dramatic as the two young women tabled contradicting proofs of motherhood.

Beingana told police that her baby was 15 months old while Akankwasa claimed that child was 17 months.

The latter testified that she produced the baby safely from the hospital, only to be told by doctors that the child has been stolen.

She said she had ever since tracked her child until recently when her investigations landed her on Beingana in Kijungu cell, Mbarara municipality.

The two women then exchanged profanities at the police stations as police officers watched in bemusement.

Police failed to resolve the matter and decided to call in for a DNA test which they said should start next week.

In a related development, police yesterday arrested another woman on allegations that she stole a child from Mbarara Referral Hospital.

Prossy Nabasa 20, a senior six student of Global High School was found with the missing 2 year old baby who was picked from the regional hospital the previous day.
