Police has Monday afternoon stormed the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) offices in Najjanankumbi and arrested a number of party officials.

The opposition party was holding is usual weekly press conference when heavily armed officers booted in and ordered all journalists to leave immediately.

The Kampala Regional Police Commander Andrew Kaggwa told reporters before sending them away that the party offices were now under police watch.

He didn’t explain whether the action was related to the recent ban on the FDC’s activities related to their defiance campaign.

Recently while explaining the ban, government argued that the injunction would not affect the party’s normal routine business but only activities related to the campaign.

After reporters were pushed out, the other FDC officers who were found inside were arrested and taken away.

These included the party’s deputy Secretary General Mr. Harold Kaija who had just addressed the press conference.

During the address, Kaija revealed that the party was preparing to swear in their presidential candidate Col Dr Kizza Besigye on the May 12 when President Yoweri Museveni will be taking oath.

Government had earlier revealed that it extended invites to the seven presidential candidates in the last February elections including Col. Besigye.

“How can somebody steal your goat and then call you for a function to slaughter it: its only fools who can attend such a function,” said Harold Kaija.

“We are also extending invitations to them when we inaugurate our own president,” he added.
