Former Makerere University Chancellor Prof. Mondo Kagonyera, who is also the senior presidential advisor on Kigezi Affairs, has been selected to serve at the recently nationalized Kabale University as Chancellor.

Kagonyera becomes the first chancellor of the University after government took it over in July 2015.

He replaces Rtd. Supreme Court Judge Justice Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba whose term of office expired.

Reports from Kabale University indicate that Kagonyera was appointed by President Museveni on the 22ndApril 2016 on the recommendation of the University Council that sat at the university on 29th February 2016.

Ephraim Manzi Tumubweine the Kabale University Council chairperson confirmed the appointment of Kagonyera when reached.

The university vice chancellor Professor Joy Constance Kwesiga welcomed the development saying that Kagonyera’s vast experience in this field is what such a young university needs.

She revealed that some of the university programs had been hampered by the university’s lack of a substantive chancellor; citing the recent postponement of the graduation which was slated for October last year.

Prof. Kagonyera described his appointment as a privilege and promised to take Kabale University to greater heights.

Kabale University started in 2003 with 42 students, after Kabale district gave out the buildings that used to house the district hostel at Kikungiri hill.

Currently, the institution boosts of over 2000 students from Uganda and neighboring Rwanda, Burundi as well as South Sudan.
