Uganda kicked off their bid to qualify for the 2019 African Cup of Nations with an emphatic victory against Cape Verde on Sunday.
Veteran striker Geoffrey Sserunkuma came off the bench to score the lone goal of the game as Uganda edged past Cape Verde in a closely contested encounter played at the Verzei stadium in Praia.
Cranes head coach Milutin “Micho” Sredojevic has hailed the team for the great performance that saw them begin the campaign on a positive note.
“I must say the boys put up a good fight. They remained focused throughout the game and we managed to get all three points away from home, buy more about ” he stated.
“It is important that we begin the campaign with a good result because this will motivate us going into the next games against Tanzania and Lesotho,” Micho added.
The Serbian tactician also applauded the players for keeping their spirits high despite the challenges going to Cape Verde.
“They remained determined and focused despite the challenges in flight connections and reaching here late. I believe that was important and it helped us to get the win here,” he asserted.
The result meant Uganda ascended to the summit of group L on 3 points ahead of Tanzania and Lesotho who have a point apiece while Cape Verde sit bottom of the group with no point.
Uganda’s next group game will be at home to Tanzania in March 2018 before taking on Lesotho.
