Over 37 people were last week charged for offences including terrorism, murder, attempted murder and arson in relation to the post- election violence in Rwenzori sub region last month Chimpreports has learnt.
Addressing journalists on Monday, the police spokesperson Fred Enanga said the suspects were charged in Bundibugyo and Kasese Magistrate Courts but noted that investigations are not yet complete.
“30 people were charged in Bundibugyo and 7 in Kasese for charges of terrorism, murder, attempted murder and arson plus aggravated robbery during the Rwenzori clashes,” Enanga said.
He said that investigations are still continuing and this will enable more people in custody and others still at large to also be charged for the various offences carried out during the clashes.
President Museveni while visiting the area recently in a bid to assess the situation said that government could not tolerate such attacks that destabilize the peace and security of the country, emphasizing that after the army deployment in the region, all the attackers “will be arrested and brought to book.”
“I don’t encourage the Bamba tribe to fight the Bakonzo because they were born in this district. The Bakonzo are your children and Ugandans, then why do you attack each other? I understand these attackers are just misled or masterminded by individuals whom we shall trace. Parents don’t allow your children to attack their colleagues because they are losing their lives in the process,” said Museveni in Bundibugyo.
Over 30 people were killed in the clashes in the Rwenzori sub-region.
The president has since met the King of Rwenzururu Charles Wesley Mumbere and his counterpart from Bamba Lt. Col. John Kamya, as part of his mission in to pacify the troubled Rwenzori Region.
