Government has suspended a planned eviction of residents in two villages of Mumpu and Mutemanti in Buwunga sub county in Masaka district, along the shores of Lake Victoria.
Yesterday, the Bukoto East Member of Parliament Florence Namayanja raised a matter of national importance urging for parliament’s intervention into the pending eviction.
Namayanja cited a notice issued by the UPDF, ordering all residents in the villages to vacate the lake shores by Thursday this week.
The residents are being accused of involvement in illegal fishing which is currently a responsibility of UPDF to put an end to the practice.
On Wednesday morning, Namayanja informed the house that some of the residents had started leaving their houses hence calling for quick action.
The Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs Adolf Mwesige while responding to the matter assured the house that the eviction exercise is going to be suspended until investigations in the matter have been finalized.
“If the notice of eviction expires tomorrow, I will quickly suspend the eviction because if the threat is eminent, then it is in order to intervene now then investigate,” the Minister said
“I would assure the Honarable member that the eviction will not precede until the circumstances under which the notice (if at all it is there) are investigated,” Mwesige noted.
