Police have been accused of arresting and detaining a breastfeeding mother together with her 7 month baby at Nalufenya detention centre.
According Dr. Amooti Katabalirwe, the acting chairperson Uganda Human Rights Commission, an impromptu visit by their team was able to find the breastfeeding mother detained.
“Our team found a breastfeeding mother with her 7 months baby detained at the facility,” Dr. Katabalirwe told journalists.
He told journalists that the mother had been stopped from breastfeeding her 7 months baby.
“It is not proper to detain a mother with her baby but stopping the baby from breastfeeding is equally brutal,” he said.
According to the acting Human Rights Commission boss, the body visited the detention facility in Jinja District on 2 occasions, adding they made a report whose details he said he couldn’t reveal.
“We recorded statements and complaints from various people detained at Nalufenya; we made reports.”
Other Torture Chambers
The acting Uganda Human Rights Commission chairman revealed that their survey found out that the police and other security organs run a number of detention centres around the country where suspects are tortured.
“There are many detention centres around the country where suspects are tortured including the Central Police Station (in Kampala),”he said.
Police has been in the spotlight for the torture of Kaweesi murder suspects.
Asked whether in their report the human rights body had found some tools used for torture of suspects, Dr. Katabalirwe mentioned electric cables among other tools used.
He said the chiefs for the various security organs would be engaged to help sort out the issues of violation of human rights especially to suspects.
