Rukungiri Crime Preventer Gets 33 Year Jail Term for Murder

A 26 year old crime preventer in Rukungiri was on Thursday sentenced to 33 years in prison by the local High Court over murder and aggravated robbery.

Court presided over by Justice Moses Kazibwe heard from the prosecution led by State Attorney Rukungiri Geoffrey Oundo,  that on the morning of 18th January 2017, Keneth Tumushabe a crime preventer, together with  Muhwezi Julius, Namara Hillary, all  residents of Kambuga  Sub County, in Kanungu district, stopped a taxi at Ntungwa River on Ncwera Bridge along Ishasha – Katunguru road in Queen Elizabeth National Park, shot its driver Gideon Byaruhanga and slaughtered Amon Tirwomwe Kadogo after he noticed them.

The victim Byaruhanga was driving a Toyota Ipsum registration number UAY 679T heading from Kihiihi to Kasese. He had two passengers in his car who were not injured.

Oundo further told court that Byaruhanga was rescued by a fellow driver behind him on the same route but died as he was being rushed to Bwindi Community Hospital.

The crime preventer Tumushabe denied the charges while Namara and Muhwezi pleaded guilty.

Justice Kazibwe then sentenced Tumushabe to 33 years while Muhwezi Julius and Namara Hillary who pleaded guilty were sentenced to 18 years for the two offences of  murder and aggravated robbery  to be served concurrently.
