OPINION: The Time Given for Sim-Card Registration is Just Sufficient

Some people are blaming UCC for giving them a ‘short period’ to register and update their sim cards using National IDs basically because of intensive queues at the offices of the National Identification and Registration Authority.

We have failed to remember that in life money and time will never be enough; It is all about appropriate planning.

This period is enough for people who are “best entitled” to it, I am talking of those who registered for National IDs but haven’t got them, people who stay abroad and failed to make it in time for ID registration, those who were young than the stipulated age by then and or people who got IDs with errors (error in spelling the holder’s name, date of birth etc), this people really deserve a fair hearing.

However the courtesy time/period extended to them till 19 May 2017, has been used as advantage by those who never bothered to pick their IDs which according to NIRA were over one million by the time of issuing the ultimatum and those who deliberately refused to register hence creating a stampede at NIRA offices.

This has made NIRA one of the busiest offices in the country given the overwhelming number of Ugandans who want to secure full identity of their country as well as to beat the sim card registration and update deadline.

Out of this practice, a lesson has been learnt that one should always strive hard to manage time to prevent such unnecessary stampedes.

Therefore as Ugandans, let us be more collaborative other than rebellious most especially towards inventions taken on by the Government aimed at driving the Nation ahead.
