Makerere University’s Appointments Board has suspended Dr. Nyanzi, a research fellow at its Institute of Social Research MISR, following a nude protest she staged at the start of the week.

The suspension which takes immediate effect came after a committee instituted by the University Vice Chancellor Prof. Ddumba Sentamu to investigate the standoff between Dr Nyanzi and the institute’s Executive Director Prof Mahmood Mamdani tabled its findings today.

Nyanzi was locked out of her officer by Mamdani for her refusal to partake in the institute’s PhD teaching program. She was however reinstated on Monday on the orders of the head of School of Humanities, as investigations in this matter kicked off.

The suspension according to reports from the University, will stand pending broader investigations of the matter.

The Appointments Committee described Nyanzi’s behavior as unfortunate and vowed to conduct a deeper investigation in the impasse through another four-member committee.

This committee is chaired by Hajjat Sharifah Bukenya from Ministry of Public Service. Other members on the committee are Prof Sarah Kiguli, Dr Sarah Ssali and city lawyer Jude Mbabali.

This development comes on the heels of relentless pressure from Makerere University staff members under their association, MUASA calling for Nyanzi to be punished for her conduct.

Former Students of the University yesterday also added their voice to this call, as well as the former Makerere Vice Chancellor Prof Venansius Baryamureeba who penned a lengthy dossier, explaining that Nyanzi was out of order.

Nyanzi who holds that her contract doesn’t include the teaching program, recently defended her act of stripping in front of media cameras, saying that only then was she able to get attention from her bosses.

The committee set to investigate Nyanzi’s matter is expected to commence work on Monday next week and report back after 25 days.

Among other things, it will review the contentious PhD teaching program at MISR, and also the misunderstanding between prof Nyanzi and her boss.
