Police this afternoon used pepper spray to arrest Forum for Democratic Change Politician Col Dr Kizza Besigye who was returning from a court hearing in Kabale town.
Besigye was in the south western district together with Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Kawempe MP Mubarak Munyagwa and other opposition leaders to answer to a 2012 case before the Kabale Magistrates Court.
From court, Besigye was intercepted by police a Rwamucucu as he headed to his home district of Rukungiri. Police reportedly said Besigye tried to sneak into the district and was arrested because he would cause security problems there.
Besigye’s car was mounted on Police truck and towed to Rukungiri Police satiation amidst heavy rains.
At the station Besigye revealed through twitter, that Police broke into his car spayed pepper spray to force him and the other passengers out.
“My vehicle has now been broken into and pepper spray pumped in it! Barely holding out. Lord Mayor and Munyagwa are already in police van,” he tweeted. “Spray was pumped from sunroof!”
Reports later in the evening indicated that Besigye, Lukwago were arrested together with a Daily Monitor reporter identified as Perez Rumanzi.
