
The Mbarara Resident District Commissioner Capt. Martha Asiimwe yesterday handed out prizes and certificates to the best performing families in Bubaare, Kashari County in terms of health and sanitation.
This was under a regional campaign by the East African Hand Wash Program which his promoting household level sanitation in Madagascar, Tanzania and Uganda.
The program started in 2011 and was extended to 2020. Its main goal is to put an end to open defecation by ensuring that every family has a toilet.
Speaking at the awarding event, the RDC Asiimwe appealed to locals to adjust their mindset and embrace the fight against hygiene related diseases.
She pointed out that a significant percentage of the national health budget goes to buying drugs for hospitals to treat preventable diseases such as cholera.
34 households in Bubaare Sub County excelled in the campaign and were rewarded with items such as flasks, blankets, t-shirts, bowels and certificates.
During the health campaign, the RDC closed two private schools in Bugamba that defied the Ministry of Education closure orders for lack of boarding facilities like proper dormitories and toilets.
These are Kibingo Parents Primary School and Kanyangongi Preparatory School, both found in Kibingo parish in Bugamba Sub County.
