Parliament has Thursday resolved to pay tribute to the late Joash Mayanja Nkangi appreciating him for his outstanding services he rendered to the Buganda kingdom and Uganda at large.
The motion was moved by the First Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. Moses Ali and seconded by the deputy opposition whip and Rukungiri Municipality MP, Rolland Mugume Kaginda, Joseph Sewungu, Minister of Justice Kahinda Otafiire among others.
Family members pay tribute
Gen. Ali described the late as a statesman who dedicated his life to the unselfish service to Ugandans in the different portfolios that he held.
“In 2013 Mayanja Nkangi was appointed the chairman, Uganda Land Commission (ULC), a position he held until 2015 when he retired from active public service and concentrated to his lawyer chambers to his time of death,” the General noted.
“Despite the scramble for prime land during his tenure as the chairman of ULC, Nkanji never crept for a single piece of land. Because of honorably and exemplary leadership, the late Mayanja Nkangi was in 1991 awarded the order of merit by King’s College Buddo.”

Ali added that government always esteemed his audacious and constructive ideas on a number issues, formed policy discussion which has helped improve governance in our country.
Hon Kaginda Kaginda said Uganda has lost a crusader for a meaningful society, a humble, religious, patriotic, loving and family man.
He however noted that Nkangi died a frustrated man because he never lived to see the kind of Uganda Investment Authority he dreamed of.

“Nkangi oversaw the establishment of Uganda Investment Authority under his reign as finance minister with expectations that it would foster development by providing incentives and equal treatment to all investors.”
While eulogizing the late, the Government Chief Whip, Ruth Nankabirwa noted that Nkanji will always be remembered for spearheading negotiations with president Museveni for the restoration of kingdoms in Uganda.
“At that time in 1993 when the decision was made, the whole country was not ready save for Buganda which stood firm and pushed through the leadership of the person we are honoring today.
