Police in Kanungu district is investigating circumstances under which an inmate died due to suspected poison.
The deceased is Enos Maniriho 21, from Kyabuyorwa upper, Butogota town council in Kanungu district.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police Spokesperson says that the deceased with nine others were arrested by police on 20th January 2017 on allegations of kidnapping people and demanding a ransom.
He says that all the nine were suspected to be collaborating with some people in the Democratic Republic of Congo to kidnap people and get money from their relatives.
Maate says that the deceased got a short illness while in Kanungu government prison and died being rushed to Kanungu Health Centre IV on 20th February 2017.
He adds that postmortem has been done and other parts of the body have been taken to government chemists in Kampala for further investigations.
Maate described the incident as unfortunate for an inmate to die from prison where they expect maximum security, adding that after the investigations the officers in charge will be aligned in court to answer charges accordingly.
