Farmers in Kyarutanga village, Kagongo Ward in Ibanda Municipality are in fear following the outbreak of an unknown disease that attacked over 4 gardens of pineapple.
The disease attacks the pineapple leaves before killing the entire plant in a matter of weeks.
Speaking to Chimpreports, one of the farmers Nicholas Ampe revealed that most of their crops turn yellowish when they reach the yielding time and eventually dry off.
He added that they have applied different chemicals to try to fight the disease but without success.
“Gardens where we have been harvesting over 100 pineapples now we get like 40; our incomes are dwindling and costs rising,” he said.
The farmers say they have reached out to the district agriculture officers who visited the fields but couldn’t get a proper diagnosis.
