Muslim Trial: How Kamoga and Group Ended Up in Jail

The arresting officer and 27th Prosecution witness in the case where former Tabliq leader Sheikh Yunus Kamoga and 13 others are charged with terrorism and murder of fellow Muslim leaders, has narrated to court how police executed the arrested all the suspects in a short period of time.

The  Assistant Superintendent of Police (names withheld) attached to Special Investigations in Kireka narrated that he received from an informant, a list of names of people believed to have engaged in the murder of Muslim clerics, and forwarded these to the Commander Of Special Operations SSP Nixon Agasirwe.

On the orders of the commander, the witness said he formed a team of officers and on 6th January 2015 managed to locate Abdul Sekayanja, one of the people on the list, who was arrested at around 3pm near Radio One in Kampala and handed to Investigating Officer Mr Ogwenge at CPS.

Sekayanja led to the arrest of three other suspects.

He adds that Sekayanja led them to two of his homes in Buddo, Wakiso district and in Mbarara where they recovered CDs.

He narrated, “While at his home in Buddo, we were confronted by his brothers who said that he had been kidnapped. When we asked them to identify themselves, they did as Siraje Kawooya, Twaha Sekitto and Jingo Rashid; all of who were on out wanted list,” he said.

From here, Siraje Kawooya took the officers to his house in Gayaza, where they recovered a yellow flyer with names of the sheikhs who were being targeted then for murder.

The following day, the witness says, they managed to arrest Sheikh Amirl Kinene at Tick Hotel Kawempe, liaising with his girlfriend who called him for a meeting.

“Kinene then mentioned several names that included his brother Hakeem Kinene Muswaswa, Muzamir Kasawuli, Badru Bukenya, Kalungi Fahad and Aisha Nakasibante,” said the officer.

Hakeem Kinene and Kasawuli were also tracked to a house they were residing in in Jinja, and arrested that night.

“We discovered a few documents in their home and a satellite phone which Amir Kinene after being questioned revealed they used in a military training which was being conducted by a one Badru Bukenya”

Amir Kinene contacted Bukenya on phone and agreed to meet in Kampala the following day, where he was also picked by police and found with a military manual according to the witness.

On 19th January 2015, he says, they arrested Karungi Fahad while he was at his shop at Energy center building Kampala.

Later on at around 10pm they arrested Sheikh Yunusu Kamoga at shell near the High Court building in Kampala while he was being driven in a friend’s car.
