Taxi Driver Injured in Kanungu Shooting

A 32 year old taxi driver in Kanungu district is fighting for his life at Bwindi Community Hospital where he was rushed after being attacked by gunmen, who shot him in the head.

Amon Tirwomwe alias Kadogo, was reportedly hit on Wednesday morning at around 6:30AM when he was driving from Kihihi in Kanungu District heading to Kasese.

He was driving a Toyota Ipsum number UAY 679P and had two passengers, when three gunmen cut them off at Ncwera Bridge on the Ishasha – Katunguru road.

Police says the attackers ordered Tirwomwe and his passengers to surrender all their belongings.

In a scuffle that followed, Tirwomwe was shot in the forehead and the gunmen fled into Queen Elizabeth National Park with a yet to be established amount of money, bags and mobile phones.

Joab Wabwire, the Kanungu District Police Commander says that the victim was rescued by another taxi driver who found him bleeding and rushed him to King David Clinic in Kihiihi Town but he was later referred to Bwindi Community Hospital.

Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for Kigezi Region says police in partnership with Uganda People’s Defense Forces have started a manhunt to get the gunmen.

Maate declined to reveal more on the incident saying that it might compromise the investigations.

The shooting comes only a week after a businessman in the area, dealing in rice was abducted by unknown gunmen.

On 12th January, Yowanasani Kyarisiima, a resident of Kabingo cell,  Kanyantorogo Sub County in Kanungu district was abducted and taken to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Up to now the abductors are demanding for 25 million shillings from family members before he is released.
