Toy Ntabwoba Nzamwita, a prominent lawyer in Kigali, has been shot dead by Rwanda National Police.
The incident occurred Friday morning at around 3:00am.
Police said in a brief statement that Nzamwita, who had taken alcohol, rammed into a checkpoint and knocked down a police officer.
“Nzamwita knocked down a checkpoint and proceeded to knock down a police officer who tried to stop him,” said Police.
The law enforcement body said the deceased “Violated a traffic police checkpoint at KCB junction near Kacyiru,” hence attracting gunshots from cops.
According to the statement seen by ChimpReports, “Officers at the checkpoint shot at the car aiming to stop it but the driver continued driving; unfortunately he was shot dead in the process.”
The shooting is likely to attract considerable public concern about the cops’ ability to exercise restraint while enforcing road safety.
Nevertheless, police regretted the “loss of life in this unfortunate incident and conveys condolences to the family of the deceased.”
The institution further urged all road users to “avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and respect traffic rules.”
It’s understood Nzamwita earlier attended a public function at a hotel in Kigali.
