Popular American filmmaker, David Steiner has been killed in a fatal accident that  claimed ten people in Iganga.

The fatal accident that left many injured involved three vehicles near Nakavule hospital in Iganga town on Monday evening.

It occurred when a Toyota Premio which was being towed on a breakdown truck fell off and rammed into a coaster belonging to Hotel Africana in which Mr. Steiner and 16 others were travelling to Mbale District.

Steiner, a filmmaker based in Chicago had reportedly traveled with students from Barbara A. Sizemore Academy in Englewood after working with them on a documentary about their school.

He was traveling with his son and several students from the Englewood school and a film crew to collect more international awards for their documentary.

Sources say the accident occurred when the chain holding the Toyota Premio to the breakdown truck broke there by ramming into the coaster.

Mrs Harriet Kyazike, a shop attendant opposite Nakavule hospital told ChimpReports that the coaster veered into the valley and Steiner died instantly as he attempted to jump out of the vehicle.

Mrs Kyazike said, “As the vehicles collided, the deceased tried to jump out in an attempt to escape the accident but unfortunately, he fell down and the coaster ran over him.”

Emma Kiyaga, who operates a mobile money stall around the spot where the accident occurred says, “it was his time; we might accuse him of jumping out of the vehicle yet actually some other nine who did not jump out also died.

Busoga East Police Region spokesman, James Mubi confirmed the incident saying that Mr Steiner was run over by the coaster as he tried to jump to his safety.

According to police, the coaster was carrying 17 passengers; six of whom were US nationals, two Israelis and nine South Sudanese of the same family.

Mr Mubi said police were investigating to establish the cause of the accident, adding, “The occupants of the coaster were from Hotel Africana heading to Mbale District for a holiday.”
