
Former West Nile Miss Tourism Sheila Princess Obia and Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) have organised a charity run aimed to support and empower girls in the West Nile region.
Sheila is organizing under the Africa Youth Movement Uganda. The two kilometer run has been scheduled for Sunday, December 18th.
“This project is seeking to fund-raise a total of 150 million shillings annually to fund the planned five (5) year initiative to promote activities with a focus on empowering the girl child as a complete person resourceful to society,” one of the organizers, Mr. Dennis Asiku said adding that, “The Run will involve 2km run for Kids below 12 years, 5 Km and 10km respectively for adults.”
Participants are expected to part with UGX 15,000 for adults while Students and children will pay 7,000 and 3,000 respectively.
According to Asiku, the project will benefit eight districts in West Nile region Uganda with focus to create awareness about the dangers of early marriages, develop a girl child to a complete individual resourceful to the society.
“Our theme this year is ‘Run to Keep Girl at School’.”
Renowned 3,000 M steeple chase runner Dorcas Inzikuru and long distance men’s athlete Moses Kipsiro are among the guests who have confirmed participation.
Players and staff of Onduparaka football club are also among the expected guests runners in the adults 10 KM race.
Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Uganda Athletics Federation and the Ministry of Education and sports are the other partners.
