Police have blocked FDC’s Col Dr Kizza Besigye from proceeding to Makerere University for his recently launched fundraising campaign to have the institution reopened.
Besigye and leaders from his opposition party, Members of Parliament and supporters are looking to raise Shs. 28billion to pay off Makerere university lecturers who went on strike for their unpaid incentive allowances.
Besigye’s fundraiser was a step down from his earlier threats to hold nationwide protests if the university was not reopened in 10 days which elapsed yesterday.
He was today slated to hold a fundraising function at Makerere’s Freedom Square, where he was also expected to deliver some of the collections he has so far obtained.

Police however, blocked the politician from leaving his residence saying he obtained no permission for the meeting.
Besigye told supports and party members at Najjanankumbi that the authorities had been duly informed about the Makerere function.

This morning he woke up to urge his supporters to throng the campus, using on the Main Gate to join in the cause.
Under the fundraising campaign, well-wishers and former Makerere students are being called upon to contribute at least 50,000 shillings to generate the required 28million, so that lecturers can resume business.
The university is unlikely to be reopened until next year when a committee appointed by President Yoweri Museveni finalizes a report on the problems reeling the institution.
