Security has been heavily beefed at the Entebbe International Airport ahead of today’s anticipated return of former FDC Presidential Candidate Col Dr Kizza Besigye.
The opposition figure who has been oscillating between the United States and Europe since he left the country last month is expected to arrive this morning on board Kenya Airways.
Our reporter Kenneth Kazibwe says Entebbe Airport has been restricted to only travelers with valid passports and visas. Jounalists were also blocked at the Airport entry with Civil Aviation Authority officials saying they needed to be cleared by the Uganda Communications Commission.
A number of opposition figures including FDC Chief Mobilizer Ingrid Turinawe MP Roland Kaginda among other party officials however were able to make it to the airport in the wee hours of the morning.
Meanwhile security along Entebbe Road has been tightened along Entebbe Road with Roadblocks and several points.
Police and military started deploying along the road as early as 5am on a number spots including Zana and Kibuye
At Kitubulu, they placed a joint road block where all vehicles underwent thorough check as occupants were ordered out.
Meanwhile in trading centers like Abayita ababiri there was more heavy deployment. At the checkpoint to the airport, only before with passports and visas were allowed.
While FDC officials claim to have permission to hold a massive procession to welcome for Besigye on the same road, Police authorities insist otherwise.
The Police mouthpiece has reiterated last night that they were not aware of any official function by the opposition political party on October 3 as it has been communicated through media.
“We received a letter on September 23 and this was followed by a meeting between FDC and the police. Their delegation was led by Wafula Oguttu and they informed us Dr. Kizza Besigye was returning on the 29th September,” Kaweesi said.
